제목만 봐서는 얼핏 햇빛이 찬란한 봄이나 여름의 밝은 내용일 것 같지만, 가사 내용은 정반대입니다. 한 남자가 젊은 시절을 술과 향락 속에 헛되이 살아온 날들을 후회하며, 아버지와 친구,그리고 사랑했던 여자에게 작별을 고하는 내용입니다. 어디로 떠나는 작별이 아니라 삶을 마감하며, 이 세상과 작별을 고하는 이 때가 밝은 태양이 찬란한 봄이어서 죽기가 너무 괴롭다는 이야기입니다. 원래 이 곡은 벨기에 출신 시인이자 작곡가인 'Jacques Brel'이 1961년도에 "Le Moribond" (The Dying Man)라는 제목으로 프랑스어로 씌워진 곡이었습니다. 이 곡을 1964년 'Rod McKuen'이 영어로 번역하고, 'Bob Shane'이 영어로 첫 녹음하였답니다. 1974년 'Terry Jacks'가 그의 앨범 'Terry Jacks'에 수록되어 "If You Go Away'와 함께 이 곡은 대단한 인기를 얻으면서 '밀리언 셀러'를 기록하였는데, 이 덕분에 이 해는 그에게 최고의 해가 되었습니다. 그리고 나중에 'Westlife'가 1999년에 다시 리메이크해서, 일본 및 우리나라에서도 엄청난 人氣를 얻었습니다.

From the title alone, it may seem like a bright song for a sunny spring or summer, but the lyrics are the opposite. It is about a man saying goodbye to his father, his friends, and the woman he loved, regretting the days when he lived his youth in vain in alcohol and pleasure. It is said that it is painful to die because the bright sun is shining in spring to say goodbye to this world, not to say goodbye to somewhere. Originally, the song was covered in French by Belgian poet and composer Jacques Brell under the title "Le Moribond" (The Dying Man) in 1961. It was translated into English by Rod McKuen in 1964 and recorded the first time by Bob Shane in English. In 1974, "Terry Jacks" was included in his album "Terry Jacks," and along with "If You Go Away," the song became so popular that it became a "Million Cellars," making it a great year for him. Later on, "Westlife" was remade in 1999 and immensely popular in Japan and Korea.
